The island of Cebu in the Philippines is famous for its annual event called Sinulog. It is a lavish three week festival that ends during the Feast of Senor Santo Nino every 3rd Sunday of January with a finale of a ritual prayer-dance parade among the devotees honoring Senor Santo Nino or the Child Jesus. As local history goes, Portuguese conquistador Ferdinand Magellan discovered the Philippines and presented this Child Jesus image to Queen Hara Amihan of Cebu as a gift in April of 1521. The image is believed to be miraculous when it was discovered unharmed by the fire amongst other burnt idols during one of the wars years later in 1565. This whole ritual prayer-dance is a said to be the representation or reenactment of this historic gesture. The dance moves mimic the country's Pahina River current (Sulog) as dancers sways to a distinct rhythm of the drums and the vernacular music and chants of praise.
Today, there is great devotion of the Senor Santo Nino in Philippine popular piety that pilgrims from different parts of the country make their yearly journey to Cebu to pay homage and take part in the procession and festival itself. Local tourism flourished as the dance itself evolved into a friendly neighborhood competition to vie for the very best in praise and dance. This created an incredible religious bond to a common devotion. Groups come in colorful costumes as provincial and city contingents with carefully choreographed moves that involves the candle wielding devotees and musicians dressed in lavishly made costumes with a beautiful queen (often the loveliest among the contingents) cradling the Santo Nino image.
The Sinulog commemorates the Filipino people's acceptance of Christianity specifically, Roman Catholicism, and their rejection of their former animist beliefs. Sinulog focuses not only on the ritual itself but on the historical aspects of the dance, which, as it has been said, represents the link the country's embrace of Christian faith.
