Recipe: Ramdon or Jjapaguri with Sirloin Steak

When you’re a foodie. It’s hard to miss this part if you watched the Parasite movie. Guess what’s I’m making?.....#ramdon

Academy award winner, director Bong Joon Ho cleverly illustrates the stark disparity between these two classes by using this dish as a metaphor to the Park family’s affluence, epitomized by the uber expensive cut of Hanu beef and the impoverished Kim family  exemplified by the cheap instant noodles.

Ramdon is simply another term of the dish used in that movie which is also commonly called Jjapaguri or Chapaguri in Korea. It is simply a combination of two different popular Korean instant noodles (Jjapa)ghetti or (Chapa)ghetti and Neo(guri)

Individually they are entirely two different noodles. The former is an instant version of the black bean noodle, served dry (like our pancit canton), while the latter is a spicy udon noodle soup dish (like our instant mami noodles). Mixing these two makes a new hybrid noodle dish called Jjapaguri / Chapaguri.

This recipe is super duper simple. My kids know how to cook instant noodles and taught them how to cook a steak properly so they should be able to cook this for their loved ones one day. ðŸ˜‚ The servings are huge mind you. One pack is good for about up to two persons so this recipe serves about three to four pax.

I managed to get some of these noodle packs within Cebu (thanks to a friend) and also got myself a 250 grams of Australian Strip Sirloin...no I can’t afford a Hanu steak.

I’ll be using the term Chapagetti in this recipe because that’s what it says in the noodle pack.

Ramdon or Jjapaguri with Sirloin Steak

1 pack Jjapaghetti or Chapagetti

1 pack Neoguri Spicy Ramyun

4 cups water

1 250g or more sirloin steak

Salt, pepper, garlic powder, butter

  1. Boil water and cook both noodles with their vegetable packs until done. Don’t include the Neoguri soup pack and the Chapaghetti sauce and oil pack.
  2. Drain and reserve 1/2 cup of the liquid.

3. In the same pan heat that liquid and pour all of the soup pack from the Neoguri, the oil and sauce pack from the Chapagetti. Stir until dissolved and toss in the noodles. Add more water if too dry. It should be a bit saucy but not too soupy. Set aside.

4. Heat a cast iron skillet and season the steak with salt, pepper and garlic powder.

5. Sear both sides and add butter when almost cooked according to your liking. I looked mine medium so I cooked about 2-3 minutes each side.

6  Let it rest for a few minutes before cutting the steak.

7. Serve on top of the noodles with a sprinkling of green onions.

Happy eats.

Go impress your date! ðŸ˜‚
